An anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the anal canal. It commonly causes some bright red bleeding and pain on opening the bowels. In most circumstances an anal fissure can be managed without surgery using a combination of ointments and medications to soften the stools. However, some fissures will not respond to this therapy and will require further treatment.
