Laparoscopic surgery, also known as “keyhole” surgery, is a technique where the surgeon uses instruments and a camera to operate through small (usually less than 1 cm) incisions in the abdomen. The technique has been shown to be safe and effective and results in faster recovery from surgery with potentially less complications. It is now the predominant technique used to operate on the colon by expert surgeons in the field. With the advances in technology and refinement in technique, laparoscopic surgery is now possible on the vast majority of patients, even those that may have been deemed unsuitable in the past.
Mr Eugene Ong has trained with some of the pioneers in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and is now considered an expert in the field. He has published and presented papers on minimally invasive surgery, has been an invited speaker and member of faculty on courses on minimally invasive surgery both in Australia and internationally and has trained numerous other surgeons in the technique.
