A bowel resection may be required for any number of reasons including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease) or diverticulitis. The area and length of bowel required to be resected will depend on individual circumstances and should be discussed with your colorectal surgeon. Nowadays it is possible to perform the vast majority of bowel resections utilising a laparoscopic (“keyhole”) approach to improve your recovery and outcomes, decrease your pain and hospital stay and decrease the risk of scars and hernias on your abdomen.
Many patients are concerned about having a stoma (“bowel bag”) when undergoing surgery to remove a segment of bowel. In the majority of cases a stoma is not required, however this will depend on your individual circumstances. Please discuss this with your colorectal surgeon.
